He was a member of First Southern Baptist Church. He was retired from the Army and was a combat veteran of the Korean War. He taught building trades at the Bledsoe/ Sequatchie Vocational School.
He is preceded in death by his parents, H.R. and Kitty Akin; and 9 brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen Akin, Pikeville; daughter Tina (Barry) Dishman, Rock Island, TN; 4 sons, Michael (Linda) Akin, Crestview, FL, Kenny (Karen) Akin, Pikeville, Steve (Sherry) Akin, Crossville, and Don Akin, Crossville; grandchildren, Megan and Macy Dishman, Chris and Sylvia Akin, James Ritter, Amanda Akin, Candace Gifford, Celeste and Wesley Akin and Steve Herren; 4 great-grandchildren; sister Marie Myers, Whitwell and several nieces and nephews.
