James Akins was born November 27, 1920 in Bledsoe County, Tennessee, the son of Henry and Kitty Swafford Akin.

He moved to Akron, Ohio in 1944, and worked at Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. He moved to Iowa in 1949, living in Lucas and Warren counties before moving to Knoxville in 1963.

He retired from the Des Moines Firestone Company in 1982. He was a member of the Knoxville Kiwanis. He was united in marriage to Lois McCormick on September 28, 1946 in Akron, Ohio.

James died October 14, 1994 at Woodbury West Care Center in West Des Moines, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, T.R. and Lewis.

He is survived by his wife, Lois, of Knoxville; four daughters, Dr. Nancy Akins, of Des Moines, Adeline Lepley of Mitchellville, Betty Bailey of Knoxville, and Loisanne Bryant of Broomfield, Colorado; four sisters, Irene Seals and Marie Meyers, both of Pikeville, Tenn., Lorene Roberts of Ringgold, Ga., and Alla Mae Lynn of Sparta, Tenn.; four brothers, Albert of Baldwinsville, Mass., Joe of Louisa, Ky., H.C. of Pikeville, Tenn., and Richard of Dayton, Tenn.; and eight grandchildren.
