On February 5, 1895, Robert's mother, Dora, died of tuberculosis (pulmonary phthisis) in Plainfield and was buried in Pottersville, part of New York’s Warren County, a town was over 35 miles north of her birth place, Glens Falls. This burial place was likely chosen to put her proximity with surviving Mills family members. The children of Cyrus and Dora split apart. Bert was adopted by his uncle, Robert Byron Mills I (RBM I). Either he took or was given the name of Robert Byron Mills, becoming RBM II or Bert for short.
Bert, for the years to come, lived in hotels with Uncle Rob, the hotel manager. In 1907, had an accident where he had four of his fingers of his right hand amputated after an accident with an ensilage cutter.
By 1917, Bert was an auto mechanic employed at Ford Motor Company garage after serving in the US Army. By the next year, he was a U.S. Army sergeant in a motor pool in WWI, according to the existing family history, and also began serving as a volunteer firefighter in Cheviot.
In 1921, he married Miriam Esther Hirst. They began courting in the Ebenezer Church in Ohio where William Norwood Hirst, Miriam's father, was briefly the minister!
Bert would be fire Chief in Cheviot for 21 years (1932-1953). This ended when he suffered a stroke while fighting a fire in 1953. In 1956, he was buried at Spring Grove. His obit calls him WWI vet and says he is associated with the American Legion.
