Barbara Beatty passed away 15 October 2015 in Visalia, California, at 94 years old, , passed away on October 15, 2015 in Visalia, CA. She was 94 years old.

Barbara, the daughter of former Nevada Governor Denver S. Dickerson and Una Reilly Dickerson, was born on 9 August 1921, along with her twin brother Belford, in Washington D.C. The family returned to Carson City, Nevada in 1923 and two years later moved to Reno after the untimely death of their father.

A Reno High graduate of 1939, Barbara began her studies at the University of Nevada, Reno where she met fellow classmate John Beatty. They were married on 10 September 1943 and moved to Maryland, where John was attending medical school. Many moves later and with twin sons in tow, the couple made Los Angeles, California, their home. Two more children, another son and a daughter, were added to the family and Pleasanton, California became their home for the next 43 years.

Barbara was a stay-at-home mother and reveled in that role. She was involved in every aspect of her children's activities, including Boy Scouts, Little League, 4-H, Camp Fire Girls, ballet, school events and sports. She loved any excuse for a road trip, often taking her older sons to surf in Santa Cruz and the younger children to ski at Bear Valley. She happily volunteered to be the driver for field trips, man the concession stand, and help in any way that was needed. Barbara enjoyed many pastimes: she played the organ, was an excellent seamstress, worked in stained glass, refinished furniture, and became proficient in the art of Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) as well as Japanese cooking.

Barbara's love of children opened the door to fourteen years working as a teacher's aide at Alisal School, Hacienda Child Development Center, and Stepping Stones Pre-School. She was "Miss Barbara" to a generation of children; years later, she would regularly run into many of these kids or their parents and they would still affectionately refer to her by that name. Barbara also worked for many years at the Cancer Society Discovery Shop. She loved to travel and began with an incredible trip to Greece with friends from her neighborhood. Over the years, she and John made trips to England, Scotland, Wales, France, Switzerland, Japan, Hawaii, and Alaska. Barbara took her last international trip to Italy at 79 and "walked the legs off" of her younger traveling companions. She didn't want to miss a single museum or art gallery.

In 2002, Barbara and John moved to Visalia to be closer to their daughter and her family. They enjoyed their life and activities at the Quail Park Retirement Community, visiting with their grandkids and their beloved Labrador, Poe, and excursions to the nearby national parks. She and John enjoyed 62 years of marriage until his death in 2005.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband. brothers Harvey, Donald, Denver and Belford Dickerson, sisters Norine Buck and June Manship.

She was survived by her children, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; a brother, and many nieces and nephews. [Edited slightly from an unsourced, user-submitted obit.]
