The announcement was recently made of the death of Mary, relict of Matthew James Jardine, at the home of her son, Stephen D., in the township of Ashley, on April 23. She was born in St. Johns, Canada on Oct. 10, 1812, where at the age of twenty she married James Brown. They removed to Syracuse, N. Y., soon thereafter, and subsequently to Buffalo. In 1850 they came to Minnesota, and settled in St. Paul, where her husband died in 1851. Two years later she married Mr. Jardine, and a little later took a claim in Glendale, Scott county, where they resided until 1866, when they removed to Ashley and settled on section 35, and built the home in which both died, and now owned by their son Stephen D. Jardine. She was the mother of eight children, five of whom survive her: Mrs. Mary J. Vessey of Eldridge, N. D., Mrs. Ellen Wright of Memphis, Minn., James H. Brown[sic]., James H. Brown of St. Paul, Charles Brown of this city and Stephen D. Jardine of Ashley, the latter the only fruit of her second marriage.
Deceased was a [woman] of rare vigor of intellect as well as of body —a strong character who impressed herself most pleasantly and favorably upon her entire circle of acquaintances. A model wife and mother, her memory will always be held in reverent esteem.
There were present at her funeral, of her near relatives: J. H. Brown, Charles Brown and family, Mary J. Vessey and her granddaughter Miss Ella Vessey of Ithaca, N. Y. Illness prevented the attendance of the daughter, Mrs. Wright.
