Adolphus S. Graham Was born: Aug. 31rst 1883 in Independence township Washington Co. Ohio. He was the son of Hamilton T. Graham born : Oct. 8,1854 Franklin, Butler PA. (some sites say Washington Co. ,Ohio )died March 8, 1894 and Mary Alice Rinard Graham born: Oct. 31,1859 Died: Dec. 15 ,1943 Washington Co. Ohio. Adolphus' father wanted him to have the middle name Samuel but Mary did not like that name so they compromised on the initial (S.) for the middle name. After his father died when he was 11 years old. Adolphus had to quit school and go to work. His mother needed he and his siblings that could working to support her large family of seven children. "Dolph" is listed as his name on the Washington County, Ohio Birth records book , BUT-- my Grandfather used that as a nickname. His records you will find in the NAME: ADOLPHUS S. GRAHAM which he used on ALL his legal documents or A.S. Graham.-- See Marriage Certificate Photo.

Adolphus married Odessa(Dessie) Nell Ridgeway daughter of Samuel Ridgeway and Lucetta Hall Ridgeway on December 11, 1907 in Washington county , Ohio. They divorced in between 1909 and 1911. I never have found the divorce papers online but perhaps they could be obtained by looking in the Probate Court records in Columbiana Ohio or Washington Co. Ohio. On the 1910 census for Franklin, Butler Co. PA. Adolphus is living with his employer William E. Percy. On the 1910 Ludlow, Washington Co., Ohio census Dessie and their son are living with her parents and incorrectly are listed having the last name Ridgeway.

Their son was:
Wilbert Edward Graham born July 20, 1908 in East Liverpool, Columbiana county, Ohio died:in Mahoning , Ohio at age 90 on March 11th 1999 See Find A Grave # 133371826
Dessie later remarried on Oct. 2 1915 to George Schlarb a widower with children.
Wilbert had two half sisters and a half brother they were:
Edna Mae Schlarb Owney born 1917 Died(?),
Carl T. Schlarb born 1918 died 1928
Elisabeth Lucille Schlarb born and died on Oct. 8, 1926 related to her premature birth.

From what I have read on Wilbert's Find A Grave Memorial ,# 133371826 , He was a hard worker and upstanding citizen of his community.

Adolphus married his second wife, on Jan. 26 ,1911 in Franklin, Butler Co. Pa. She was: Grace Lillian Weitzel Graham the daughter of Joseph Moore Weitzel Joseph Moore Weitzell Born:Nov.4,1849 in Muddy creek, Butler CO. PA. Died: April 2,1907 Butler , Co. PA. and Asenath Phoebe Stephenson Weitzel Born : March 3,1848 and Died: In Butler Co. PA. . Grace Lillian Weitzel Graham was born April 23, 1885 and died on Sept. 15 ,1966 of a stroke, while visiting relatives living in the Butler Co. Pa. area. Adolphus and Grace were true soul mates and very much in love . Adolphus grieved for her greatly till the day he died and often would tear up thinking about Grace.

Their Children were:

Irma L. Cypher( Married: Cletus Cypher) Born: Sept. 21, 1911 Died April 12, 1997 Butler Co., PA.

Esther Elisabeth Pyle (Married: Charles Pyle) Born : Jan. 24,1913 Died: Sep. 18 2005 Butler Co. PA.

Warren Adolphus Graham,(Married: Anna Minteer) Born : February 10, 1915 in Lisbon, OH. Died January 20, 1993 in Tucson, AZ. He is buried in Butler Co. ,PA. Memorial # 77649160

Martha Asenath Graham Minteer was born June 14, 1918 in Lisbon, Ohio (She married Arthur Henry Minteer , he was the brother of Anna Minteer Graham) Martha died: Feb. 10, 2003 in Huntsville, Al. Her cremated ashes remain with her daughter, at this time. At the time of her birth a name had not been chosen for Martha. Her Birth Certificate shows a supplement in which her name was added later.

His children with Grace were all born in various parts of Columbiana County, Ohio This is where The Adolphus Graham family lived Grace and Adolphus lived after they were married until sometime about late in 1921 to 1929.

Adolphus then worked on a farm for a man named Graham( who was no relation to the family) .The family lived in a two story white farm house owned by his employer from sometime after 1920 until about 1935 to 1939. In 1940 Adolphus was working at a Dairy Farm.

According to one of his two obituaries He and his wife Grace moved to Tennessee in 1941 and he was working for Harrison Construction company.

In late 1942 to 1943 Adolphus moved with Grace, to join their daughter Martha and son-in-law Arthur Henry Minteer, in the newly formed town of Oak Ridge TN. Adolphus worked in the maintenance of the excavation machinery that helped to build the Oak Ridge "A- bomb" facilities which were part of "The Manhattan Project". Of course Adolphus had no idea what the work was about at that time. At the end of the war Adolphus received a certificate and "A Bomb" pin from the government for his work at Oak Ridge, TN.

A family story was told that, while working there my Adolphus was washing the grease off of his hands in gasoline and a man was smoking in that area where he should not have been smoking. The man threw his cigarette down and it lit the gasoline and set my grandfather's hands on fire. This made his son-in-law Arthur very mad and he had to be held by others so he wouldn't beat the responsible party senseless. Arthur Minteer was a very mild mannered gentleman but cared very much for his father-in-law

Adolphus and Grace then moved at the end of WWII (1945) to ALCOA , TN. with her daughter Martha, and their son-in-law Arthur. They retired and lived on the property their son-in-law owned there. Both Families had Travel trailers on the property. The "Minteer's" resided on this property in a very large trailer and the Graham's in a smaller travel trailer.

In 1957 Arthur and Martha bought a home in Maryville, TN. This was on Wildwood Rd. on the Mitchell Hollow" side of Maryville . Adolphus and Grace resided in their travel trailer on their son-in-laws property just a few feet away from the "Minteer" home.

Adolphus and Grace spent lots of time with their adopted grandchildren Myra S. Minteer and Marvin Lee (Buddy) Minteer during their childhood.Adolphus had a fantastic memory. He would often repeat poems he had memorized as a child and adult. He loved Robert Frost poems . He was also an avid reader and loved reading his Bible. Adolphus was quite close to his adopted grandson Marvin Minteer. He helped his adopted granddaughter Myra with reading from an early age. Due to his help she scored a collage reading level on tests when she was in 6th grade. Adolphus also liked to whittle things out of wood and work with flowers and gardening in his retirement years.

Adolphus was a staunch Republican and member of "The Church of Christ" till the day he died. Adolphus was an active member of the Maryville, Tn. "Church of Christ" for over 27 years. Adolphus never missed a Sunday or Wednesday night Bible meeting unless he was sick. Both marriages he had were by "Church of Christ" ministers. He also was instrumental in getting his son-in-law Arthur Minteer to join that church about 1942 to1945.
After WWII Adolphus and his wife had a trailer parked on their son-in-law Arthur Minteer's land in Alcoa, TN.

Arthur Minteer bought a home and land in 1957. Adolphus and Grace lived at the Wildwood Rd. location in Maryville, Tn. Grace Graham lived there until her death in 1966. Adolphus lived there until he spent a few months at a local nursing home in Maryville about mid -1972 . He returned to Butler Co. Pa. , about 1973. Adolphus S. Graham died in Butler Co. PA. on Dec. 5, 1974 in a local Nursing home . His cause of death was pneumonia. Adolphus is buried beside his wife, Grace, in Butler County Memorial Park Cemetery in Butler, Butler Co. PA. Adolphus S. Graham is very greatly missed by all his surviving grandchildren.
