Bonnie L. Westring, 83, of Columbus, NE formerly of St. Edward, NE, passed away Sunday, April 15, 2018, at the Brookstone Acres in Columbus, NE.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Augustana Lutheran Church in Genoa, NE, with Rev. Joshua Feala officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in St. Edward, NE. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday at Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward, NE.

Bonnie was born March 1, 1935, at 2:30 a.m., in Fullerton, NE at Grandma and Grandpa Killham’s home. She was the first born daughter of Merwin Henry Adams and Francis Marie (Killham) Adams. Bonnie was the protective, spunky older sister of Joyce and Margie. The most important part of her life was her love of her family. Bonnie was baptized at the Fullerton Methodist Church. They lived in Fullerton until the spring of 1938. Her dad was laid off work so they traveled to California in a 1929 Model A Ford coup. Life in California was just as difficult. Bonnie and her mother traveled back to Nebraska on a train just before Joyce was born in September 1938. Her dad traveled by car with their few belongings. Their luck changed and her dad was rehired at the Iowa-Nebraska Light and Power Company in Fullerton. In 1943, her dad was promoted as superintendent of the now Nebraska Public Power District so they moved to St. Edward. Bonnie was confirmed at the St. Edward First Methodist Church and spent the next 40 years living in St. Edward.

She attended St. Edward Public Schools and graduated from St. Edward High School in 1953. Bonnie enjoyed helping at the St. Edward alumni banquet and faithfully attended for 62 years. She only missed the last two years due to failing health from Parkinson Disease. To Bonnie, St. Ed’s alumni weekend was considered a holiday event and her children were always expected to attend.

Bonnie married her high school sweetheart, Joseph William (Billy) Carter, on February 28, 1954, at the First Presbyterian Church in St. Edward. To this union they were blessed with three children, JoEtta, Ken and William Joseph (BJ). Billy and Bonnie operated the J.W. Grain Elevator in St. Edward. Bonnie was a devoted wife and enjoyed spending time with their children. A daily family Sunday event was traveling the country roads listening to the Big Joe Polka show while Billy visited with area farmers and they all got treats at West Chicago. Bonnie was always an organizer and very active in the St. Edward community, as a scout leader, and Presbyterian Church activities. She loved cooking and always made sure there was a feast prepared for everyone each holiday and birthday. At harvest time she would fix hundreds of sandwiches to give to the farmers as they sat in the long lines at the elevator. Billy died unexpectedly March 29, l975, changing Bonnie’s life forever.

Bonnie started working at the Cloverlodge Care Center in 1975. She decided to attend college and received her LPN degree. She credits her favorite instructor, Margaret Baker, helping her through college as a non-traditional student in 1976. After graduation, Bonnie often worked the night shifts at Cloverlodge Care Center and Genoa Long Term Care facility until she retired in 1988. Bonnie was born to be a nurse and always made sure residents were cared for with the utmost respect. She always took care of others before she thought of her own needs.

Bonnie married Robert Westring on October 28, 1978. To this marriage she was blessed with five stepchildren, Rob, Laurie, Missy, Darren and Kevin. Bob and Bonnie lived in Genoa and operated the Westring and Sons Trucking. Bonnie was a lifetime member of the Genoa Legion Auxiliary Post# 144, took pride in donating gallons of blood at the American Red Cross Blood Mobile Drive, selling daffodils for the American Cancer Society, and helping with Augustana Lutheran Church activities. Bob and Bonnie moved to the Reynoldson farm just outside of St. Edward in 2002. Bonnie loved nature, seeing the deer and turkeys in their yard, and tending to her garden and flowers. Together they loved attending their children and grandchildren’s sporting, music, church, and school events. Bob and Bonnie’s voices could always be heard cheering loudly from their seats in the stands or on the sidelines of games. Bonnie and Bob also enjoyed bowling, dancing, and enjoying parties with their friends. Bonnie was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2001, but continued to be involved in the Beaver Valley Senior Center, auxiliary, and church events as much as she could. She enjoyed visiting with everyone she met. Bob died unexpectedly on December 17, 2003 and once again Bonnie was left heartbroken but strong in her faith of eternal life.

She moved to Columbus to The Heritage Meridian Gardens in 2012 and Brookestone Acres in 2016. Throughout her declining health from Parkinson’s disease she did not complain. However, she often commented how much she missed cooking and doing laundry, so she stayed involved in making crafts, serving on the resident’s board to voice concerns, and continued to “teach” the young nurses who cared for her.

Bonnie departed this earthly life April 15, 2018, as a brief ray of sunshine shined on her face and taps played on the television at Brookestone Acres, Columbus, Nebraska.
