Mr. Wilfred Monroe, a lifelong resident of Sunset, was born on July 13, 1941 to Varise Monroe and the former Eleanor Smith. He was united in marriage to Mary Wheeler on May 27, 2000. Wilfred was part of a trail ride organization in his early years and horses were a great passion for him. He worked as a truck driver at St. Landry Packing for 30 years and more recently was employed at J.T. Wein as a diesel mechanic until he retired in 2011.
Mr. Monroe was an awesome, hilarious, courageous, well-known, caring, kindhearted and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and mentor to all who came in contact with him.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Mary Wheeler Monroe of Sunset; four sons, David Monroe and his wife, Connie, of Sunset, Christopher Monroe and his wife, Erica of Sunset, Tyrone Harrison of Church Point and James Monroe of Sunset; four daughters, Felicia Williams and husband, Dustin, of Sunset, Keisha Pierre and husband, John, of Sunset, Sherell Wheeler and Theryl, of Sunset and Myeisha Winfield and husband, Keyanda, of Lafayette; twenty seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one sister, Kathleen Singleton and husband, Edward of St. Martinville; three godchildren, Jamie Payne, Latara Richard and Theodore Duplichet; four sisters-in-law, Barbara Manning, Sheryl Wheeler, Margaret Ambeau and Betty Monroe; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones.
Mr. Monroe with a big golden heart was preceded in death by his parents, Variste Monroe and the former Eleanor Smith; three brothers, Winston Monroe, Herman Monroe and Johnnie Charlot; three sisters, Mary Ethel Livings, Myrtle Mae Boxie and Geraldine Plumbar; four brothers-in-law, Joseph Hurley Boxie, Sr., William Plumbar, Sr., Anthony Wheeler, A.J. Livings; and three sisters-in-law, Cheryl Jean Monroe, Annette Wheeler and Emma Charlot.
A rosary will be prayed at 9:00 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home.
The family requests visiting hours be observed 8:00 a.m. until time of service on Saturday.
