He is the son of William Stephens and Rowena Dever. There were 10 children in the family . James was the 6th child.
1. Joseph Jefferson Stephens 1810-1871 He married Julia Jael Kavanaugh Woods. on Nov.29, 1832 in Cooper County, MO. They had 10 Children.
After Julia died Joseph remarried to Marry Jane McClain on Nov. 15, 1857 in Cooper County, MO. They had 2 boys,
2. Phillip Dever Stephens 1812-1877. He married Sarah Matilda Howard on Aug. 6, 1839 in Morgan, Missouri. They had 11 children.
After Sarah pass away , he remarried to Mary Catherine Smith on July 8, in Tipton, MO
3. Gerald Dodge Stephens 1814-1870 He married Mary Polly Cropper on Sep 4 1833 in Cooper, MO They had 8 children.
4. Peter T Stephens- 1816- 1900 He married Elizabeth M. Dallis on Mar. 14, 1839 They had 3 children.
5. Rhoda A Stephens- 1819-1889 . She married Rev. William M. Robertson. He was a pastor of the surrounding areas. They had 9 children.
6. William Jennings Stephens-1823-1862 (He was in the Civil War, He was a private in regiment 13th Indiana V Cav. ) He married twice. First to Nancy p Hume on Oct 5,1848 in Moniteau MO they had 2 children.
Then he married Cerilda Cary on Nov 28, 1854 They had 3 children.
7. Winifred Ann Stephens 1825-1853 She married Elijah Thompson Renshaw on Mar 3, 18842 in Cooper ,MO. They had 3 children.
8. Rowena Dever Stephens- 1831-1908 She married William Hampton Brown on Oct 3, 1849 in Tipton, MO They had 5 children. William was a judge for the county.
9. Charles Woods Stephens 1834-1906 He married Emma Ellen Sawyer on Apr 13, 1874 in Cherokee, KS They had 5 children.
