Peabody Keyes born 1 Nov 1763 Shrewsbury, Massachusetts son of Cyprian Keyes and Martha Bush married 12 Jan 1789 at Princeton, Massachusetts, Persis Brooks born 4 Jan 1762 Marlborough, Massachusetts daughter of Charles Brooks and Mary Hapgood. It is believed that he is the Peabody Keyes enumerated in Orwell, Rutland County, Vermont in 1800 with one male of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1785-90), one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1756-74), two females under age ten (b. 1791-1800), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1756-74). The members in the household would seem to match the purported family of Peabody and Persis. Peabody and Persis are related to have removed to Wells Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania (neither Bradford County or Wells township had yet been formed at that date) in the spring of 1808 with their family. This date may be accurate, as Peabody does not appear on the 1808 assessment list (compiled 1807) of Tioga Township (included present Wells township at that date). However, Joseph Baker, of Rutland, in Worcester County, Massachusetts, yeoman, was appointed guardian of Polly Keyes (Polly was the nickname for Mary), being more than fourteen years of age, and Asenath Keyes, under fourteen years of age, children of Peabody Keyes, late of Princeton, Worcester County, Massachusetts, dated 4 October 1808. This would suggest that Peabody was deceased by October 1808 and did not make the journey to Wells Township. Joseph Baker was the husband of Lavinia Keyes, sister to Peabody. Peabody Keyes was enumerated in the 1810 census of Smithfield Township, Lycoming County (Bradford County and Wells Township had not yet formed), Pennsylvania with one male under age ten (b. 1801-10), one male of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1785-94), three females under age ten (b. 1801-10), one female of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1795-1800), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1766-84). There was no male in the household of Peabody’s age and the eldest male in the household was likely his son William. There was an older female in the household that could be Persis. If Peabody was deceased, which the court record of Worcester County, would strongly suggest, it is unknown why his name would appear as the head of household on the 1810 census enumeration. Census enumerations are known to often be in error for various reasons.
In the genealogy of Robert Keyes of Watertown, Mass., 1633, by Asa Keyes, dated 1880, it is related that “Peabody Keyes, 4th son of Cyprien, Jr., married Persis Brooks of Princeton. His children were born before his removal to Pennsylvania. The exact date of removal is uncertain but it is supposed by his grandson to have been about 1802. He settled at Jackson, Tioga Co., probably near Daggett’s Mills, as that was their post office and letters addressed to that place still reach the family. The country was new, and they were among the first settlers. Persis, wife of Peabody, died after his removal to Penn., and he married again, but it does not appear there were children. Peabody died some years after his removal to Penn. He was found dead in the road, and from his position, it is supposed he slipped and fell on the ice.” In The History of Bradford County by Craft, 1878 it is related that “The first death of an adult was that of Peabody Keyes, who, soon after moving to the village of Wells, slipped on the ice, and dislocated his neck, December 25, 1813.”
The grandson mentioned above would be William Brooks Keyes born 16 Mar 1812. He would not have known either his grandfather Peabody or his father William and any information related to him would have been by his mother Saloma Daggett or possibly siblings of his grandfather. This could account for Peabody reportedly having died in Mosherville. Certainly, William died in Mosherville in 1813 per the inscribed memorial marker in Mosherville Cemetery. In the genealogy of Robert Keyes of Watertown, Mass., 1633, by Asa Keyes, dated 1880 it is related that William Keyes died in June 1813.
