Mr. Akins was born in Plain Dealing, LA on December 14, 1932. He was one of two children born to the late Nonnie P. Akins (1895-1952) and Carrie Goodwin Salter (1907-2000).
After graduating from Belcher High School, he served in the U.S. Air Force (USAF) during the Korean Conflict.
He also served as a Caddo Parish Sheriff's deputy and was later employed in the automobile business. Prior to his retirement in 1998, he was the head of maintenance with D & B Management.
He resided in Bossier City most of his adult life. He was an active Mason at the Grand Masonic Lodge of Louisiana Temple No. 448 in Bossier City.
He and his wife Marian moved to Alabama in 2001, where they were active members of the Helena United Methodist Church.
Mr. Akins is preceded in death by his wife of 17 years, Mary Green Akins (1937-1986); a brother, Clyde P. Akins (1929-1987); and a son, James Robert Akins, Jr. (1960-2002).
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 31 years, Marian H. Akins; daughter, Patti A. Akins of Shreveport, LA; sons, Nicholas K. Akins and wife Donna of New Albany, OH, Richard N. Akins and wife Danette of Pelham, AL. Jim is also survived by grandchildren, Matthew and Christopher Akins, Michael Cade, Andrew and Marianne Akins, and one great grandson, Thompson Akins.
Mr. Akins had a great sense of humor, a gentle care for children, and strong devotion to his family and friends.
Services for Mr. Akins will be at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, March 11, 2018 at Rose-Neath Bossier Chapel in Bossier City. Officiating will be Rev. Daniel Nelson. Interment will follow at Rose-Neath Cemetery.
