Fort Bend Herald, January 25, 2018:

Simon James Charanza Sr., age 85 of Needville surrounded by his family, went peacefully to be with the Lord when the angels came early Wednesday morning January 24th, 2018. Simon was in the hospital since Thanksgiving Day fighting complications of Congestive Heart Failure, Renal Disease, and pneumonia. He had many ups and downs during this time with the illness and fought a good fight until his body could fight no longer. He was tired and weak and when God saw this, He decided it was time for him to come home.

Simon was blessed with many talents. He made the best barbeque around and always made enough to feed an army. He would always think of his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. Momma would call each one and say “Daddy’s BBQing, bring a big foil pan.” Simon made delicious, homemade smoked sausage and also made his own hog head sausage and again always fed the whole family. His passion was his big garden. He would be out there every day if not plowing it, he would be planting, watering, or chopping. He said his garden was his therapy. He was always proud to share his vegetables with his family and neighbors. There would even be strangers stop or drive by and inquire if he would sell some vegetables. Our daddy had a “green thumb” that’s for sure. He also loved his favorite John Deere and Farmall tractors, you would always see him tinkering with them. He was a character. Always had a quick come back for everything. He kept you on your toes. There was never a dull moment. He was also an avid polka music fan, so it rubbed off on his children especially great grandson Tucker.

Simon served in the United States Army as a sergeant in the Korean Conflict War from 1953-1955. The day before he was to leave to go into the Army on March 24th, 1953, he married the love of his life, Clara Emilie Uherek, daughter of Rudolph Paul and Emily Louise Uherek. The happy couple traveled to visit relatives in Caldwell, Tx before he had to leave to El Paso the next morning. Simon and Clara would have been celebrating 65 years of marriage this coming March 24th 2018.

He is survived by wife, Clara Emilie Uherek. Sister, Mary Ann Hurta. Six beautiful children Simon J. Charanza Jr. and wife Debra, Cynthia Zwahr, Linda Freund and husband Paul, Patrick Charanza, Anthony Charanza and wife Renee, Brandy Rader and husband Craig. Grandchildren Tracey and Jennifer, Tiffany Gobar and husband Matt, Cody Zwahr, Dakota Freund, Marina Charanza, Blake, Denisse, Kaleigh, and Corey Charanza, Brianna Sablatura and fiancé Alec Guinn, and Kylee Faith Rader. Great grandchildren, Emma Charanza, Tucker Gobar, and baby Gobar and numerous nephews and nieces, and cousins.

Simon is preceded in death by his parents, Frank Herbert and Rosie Edna Charanza, father in law Rudolph Paul Uherek, mother in law Emilie Uherek, brothers Paul Joe, Frank Jesse, Edward James Charanza, sister Lillie Mae Witek and husband Ray, brother in law Ervin Hurta, neice Gail Hurta, son-in-law Darrel “Boobie” Zwahr, August Uherek, Richard Uherek and wife Ruby. Sister-in-law Edna Breithaupt and husband Lester, nephews Randy and Michael Breithaupt.

Daddy will be truly missed by all of his family and friends. He was a loving, caring, hardworking, and kind man and always thought of others. Rest in Peace Daddy, Popo, Uncle Simon. We love you forever and ever.

Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Friday, January 26, 2018, at the Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 27, 2018, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Needville, Texas with burial to follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
