She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Houston, texas and when she returned to Grapeland, she was a member of New Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where she faithly served as the church secretary. She was a volunteer for the Germany Community Fire Department. She was instrumental in preserving New Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was a part of designating several historical markers around town.
She attended New Energy Enterprise School System that was later consolidated to Glover Junior High in 1936. She then attended Crockett High School were she graduated I 1941. After high school, she attended Mary Allen Junior College in Crockett, Texas. It was the first all-black woman's college in the State of Texas.
She met Byron Overshown in Augusta, Texas and they were married in September of 1945. One beautiful daughter was born. Although she only had one child, she was mother figure to many of her nieces and nephews. Florarean worked for Weingarden Grocery store and Sears, Roebuck & Co. Department Store, where she retired. Upon retirement she returned to Grapeland to build her dream home.
