Born on January 7, 1935 in New Iberia, LA, and passed away January 16, 2018 in Sacramento, CA. Raised in New Iberia and a resident of Sacramento, CA, for most of her life. She graduated from Jonas Henderson High School in New Iberia, LA.

Avis Jefferson was a retired registered nurse at Sutter Memorial Hospital. She was also a long time member at Shiloh Baptist Church in Sacramento, CA. There she was the Sunday School Secretary of Class A-6 and Co-Chair of Lydia Circle. She volunteered many hours at Maryhouse and Loaves & Fishes.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert Lombard and Chevie Hamilton, as well as her maternal grandmother, Victoria Warner. Avis leaves to mourn her death her husband of 49 years, William J. Jefferson Sr.; one daughter, Karen Freeman (Joseph); two sons, Darrell Williams (Greer) and William Jefferson Jr. (Connie); two grandsons, Joseph Freeman III and Brandon Blymyer; one granddaughter, Victoria Freeman and one great-granddaughter, Ariana Freeman; special cousins, Mary Morris of Los Angeles, CA and Rosemary Rochon of New Iberia, LA; one sister-in-law, Alice Shaw of Cotton Valley, LA. As well as a host of nieces and nephews to cherish her memories.

The viewing will be on Wednesday, January 24th from 2-6pm at Thompson's Rose Chapel, 3601 5th Ave, Sacramento, CA 95817. Memorial service will start at 11am at Shiloh Baptist Church, 3565 9th Ave, Sacramento, CA 95817 on Thursday, January 25, 2018. Interment will be at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery on Tuesday, January 30th at 1:30pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the Loaves in Fishes in Sacramento, CA at www.sacloaves.org.
