Our beloved Sandra Kay Shaw departed this earthly life on Thursday, December 14, 2017 with her family by her side. She labored, served and loved unconditionally on this earth for seventy-four years.

Sandra Kay was born on May 24, 1943 in Springfield, Illinois the daughter of Alvin Wade Kirk, Sr. and Marcella May (King) Kirk. She was a pioneer employee of Illinois Bell in Springfield being one of the first African American employees. She provided 34 years of loyal service with AT&T.

She united in Holy Matrimony to Roger Shaw, Sr. This was an inseparable union of 51 years truly ordained by God that only death did them part.

Sandra Kay’s life centered around Christ. She was a longtime faithful member of the North Jasper Street Church of Christ where she served as a Sunday School teacher for over 20 years. She also was a member of the Boser Women’s Association.

Sandra Kay loved her entire family. She considered her neighborhood, her church and the Decatur community all a part of her family. In efforts to bring her neighborhood together, she started Neighborhood United. She also worked with DOVE.

She loved her flowers here on earth; she is now a blooming flower in God’s Heavenly Garden.

Her memories shall forever remain in the hearts of her husband, Roger Shaw, Sr. of Decatur, IL; daughters: Alice (Gary) Hicks of Raymore, MO and Marsha (Robert Lavail) Gray of Decatur, IL; son, Roger Shaw, Jr. of London, England; brother, Alvin Wade Kirk, Jr.; five grandchildren: Timika S. Hicks, Gary Hicks, Jr., Antonio L. Burton, DeAndri L. Burton. Tiffany S. Hicks; sister-in-law, Priscilla Kirk of Decatur; special cousin, Lillian Smith of Mansfield, OH, a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and an abundance of family in Springfield, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters: Sharon Irwin Jones and Ella Jean Hines.

The family would like to give special thanks to caregivers: family friends, Katherine and Shantale Lewis, niece, Brenda Lee; nurses, Becky Parini and Tykia along with DMH Hospice.
