She was born Feb. 8, 1909 in Santa Clara, Utah to Lorenzo and Susette Hafen Leavitt. Life in the little farming community soon after the turn of the century provided what she remembered as an idyllic childhood with its "one-room" schoolhouse, orchards, farmland, piano lessons family, friends and simple pleasures. Her brother and six sisters were Crayton (Elva), Verna Stucki (Ether), Fay Gates (Elbert), Eula Andrus (James), LaRue Higbee (Clyde), Jean Morris (Robert) and Emma Willis (Charles). Emma is the last surviving family member.
After high school in Cedar City and St. George, she continued her education at BYU, USC and Dixie College. With a degree in English and minors in music and sociology from BYU, she was the first girl in Santa Clara to earn a B.A. degree.
In 1938, while teaching school in Cedar City, she met and married Jethro (Roe) Middleton Palmer. They were parents of three children: Carl (Bette), St. George, Mary Ann Morgan (Tony) and Kent (Robin) Salt Lake City. After raising her children and teaching private piano, Vivian returned to the classroom, teaching English at Cedar Jr. High to finally retire after 19 years with the Iron Co. School District.
Vivian loved Shakespeare and Chopin, gardening, travel and entertaining-especially with her husband at the cabin on the Cedar Mountain ranch. Active in community and church affairs, she was a PTA President, charter member of Cedar City League of Women Voters, active member (over 50 years) of En Avante Literary Club, ward organist for many years and Relief Society teacher when literature and Shakespeare were the curriculum. She enjoyed her career in education, especially teaching literature and she also enjoyed being a wife and mother-creating a beautiful home and always encouraging her family in musical and educational pursuits.
Preceded in death by her husband, she is survived by her children, ten grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Cedar 9th/17th ward building in Cedar City, 256 south 900 West at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 27, 2012. Friends and family may call from 9-10:30 a.m. before the services. Burial will be in the Cedar City Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Vivian's name to the Utah Shakespeare Festival.
