In 1910 he, his parents, his three siblings, and a servant, 18-year-old Laura I Trindle, lived in a house they were renting at 217 Chandler Avenue in Johnstown, PA. His father worked as a locomotive engineer.

In 1920 he and his parents and his seven siblings lived in a house they owned, mortgage free, at 164 West Ranson Avenue in Blairsville, PA. His father worked as a locomotive engineer and Don worked as a caller (coaler?) for a railroad.

In 1930 he and his wife and their son lived in an apartment they were renting for $38 a month at 1937 Middle Street #2 in Sharpsburg, PA. They did have a radio. He worked as a brakeman for a steam railroad.

In 1940 he and Mary and their two children lived in a place they were renting for ten dollars a month at 17 North Spring Street in Blairsville, PA. He worked as a brakeman for a steam railroad, with an income in 1939 of $1500 for 52 weeks of work.
