---Civil War Veteran---

Adam was born Sept 9, 1827 to Johann George and Anna Elizabeth Brandau (nee Andreas) in Dorla, Hesse, Germany. It is possible he was born in Wertz, which is a town nearby, as many of his brothers and sisters are listed as being born in Wertz. His confirmation was on May 15, 1842 in Dorla, Hesse, Germany. Often the name was listed as Brandan, since a written "au" looks like an "an". His confirmation is the best evidence available for his actual DOB.

Adam and his little brother Wilhelm (1831) came to the US, and were living near each other in St. Louis. Adam married Anna Katherina Menges on March 8, 1858 in St. Louis. In June 1860, when his daughter Anna died they were living near Jackson St. and Barry St. Anna was buried at the St Vincent de Paul Church Cemetery, very nearby, so one might assume this was their church. They had at least 10 children:

Maria Josephine born Jul 14, 1857 in St. Louis (drown 1872 in Milwaukee, WI)
Anna born Dec 1859 (died Jun 2, 1860 buried St Vincent de Paul Church, St Louis)
Adam Jr #1 born Feb 1861 in St. Louis (died Oct 28, 1861 in St. Louis)
George T born Jun 24, 1862 in Milwaukee, WI (died 1921 Milwaukee, WI) married Bertha Grunert
Pauline Mary born Jan 1, 1864 in Milwaukee, WI (died between 1926 to 1929 in Milwaukee, WI) married Robert Grunert
John Charles born Apr 26, 1867 in Milwaukee, WI (died about 1890 in Milwaukee, WI)
Adam Jr #2 born Feb 6, 1870 in Milwaukee, WI (died before 1880)
Michael Frank born Aug 18, 1872 in Milwaukee (died 1946 in Milwaukee) married Lizzie Stoltz
Angela (Annie) born 1877 in Milwaukee married Frank Siegfried Jr in 1895 and they divorced about 1898. Frank Jr shows as being a widow on the 1900 census, but this doen't mean that Annie died. The 5/31/1900 death associated to her is not correct. Frank Jr remarried in 1902.
Ida Anna born Jul 15, 1879 in Milwaukee (died 1880 in Milwaukee)

On May 1, 1861 Adam joined the 4th Regiment Missouri Volunteers along with his little brother William. They completed this stint July 30, 1861. He may have initially rejoined after this, but I believe he had 2nd thoughts, as the family moved to Milwaukee between November 1861 and January 1862, which was just after his sons death.

On the 1870 census, Adam is listed as a US Citizen. Adam came to Milwaukee in 1862 worked as a tanner at Sanger & Co Milwaukee, then Trostell & Gallun, which became Gallun Leather. He listed 'Engineer' as his job, so he may have been doing something with the equipment there. In 1880 he became a bridge tender and then 1887 was running a saloon and boarding house at 824 N. Water St.

Adam died Feb 5, 1888 of Cirrhosis of the liver.
