He then enlisted in Philadelphia March 1, 1864, mustered into federal service there March 24 as a private with Co. G, 186th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 15, 1865.
He married Mary Alta Musselman March 5, 1865, in Elizabethtown, Lancaster County, and fathered Owen Musselman (b. 11/19/65), Ernest Luther (b. 12/08/67), Dora M. (b. @1870), S. Blanche (b. @1872), George P. (b. @1877), Charles Roy (b. 05/24/84), and Caryle A. (b. 07/03/86). In 1890, he lived in Gettysburg, Adams County, but in 1894 moved to Philadelphia to work at the United States Mint. He died in his home from "locomotor ataxia" with "val[vular] disease of heart" a contributing factor.
