Arthur was the eldest son of Charles De Shield and Amanda (Rouse) Crane. His mother was an Iowan. He grew up on a farm in Beaver township, Dallas County, IA. He had younger siblings: Martha(Marnie), William, Susie, Belle, Harry, and Harriett. By the 1900 census he and Martha and William C. live in a rooming house in Des Moines where they were all students.
Arthur had 5years of college education, as did his bride:
Arthur Wesley Crane married Mary Frances Stanley on January 1, 1907 in Hardin, Iowa. Their children:
1. Mary L., born about 1909
2. Robert S., born 1915
3. Helen E.
Arthur was superintendent of schools at Belle Plain, Iowa, but by 1940 they owned a home in Ames, where they raised turkeys. All their children went to Iowa State.
