12 Mar 2007: Claude Homan Myers, 93, passed from his Spring Mills farm home to his heavenly home Saturday, March 10, 2007. Born March 29, 1913, on a farm near Pennsylvania Furnace, he was the second son of the late Charles and Alice Homan Myers. He married Jane Mattern, the love of his life, Aug. 21, 1941. Jane died May 2, 1987. Claude graduated from State College High School and received bachelors and masters degrees from Department of Science at Penn State. For more than 35 years, Claude worked for Farmers Home Administration in the U. S. Department of Agriculture, retiring in March 1975. During his FHA years, he made the first water association loan to rural families and farmers east of the Mississippi River and provided training to citizens of other countries who were to make rural property loans in their home countries. In 1961, Claude received the USDA Superior Service Award from National Secretary of Agriculture. At the end of World War II, Claude served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946. An active member of Grace United Christian Church in Spring Mills, Claude served on the church council, as a Sunday school superintendent and as a teacher of the men's class for many years. Past activities also included serving as a 4-H club leader, president of Agriculture Extension Association, president of Baileyville Grange, president of Bellefonte Kiwanis Club. In 1959 he founded Kiwanis Club Pancake Day. He also served as Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor of Kiwanis. He was a charter member and president of Centre County Agriculture Forum and helped organize Centre County Farm City Week. He was a charter member and chairman of Gregg Township Planning Commission. He was member of State College American Legion Post 245, State College Masonic Lodge Number 700, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Consistory of Valley of Williamsport, and Jaffa Shrine in Altoona. A special honor came with the induction of Pennsylvania Voter's Hall of Fame for 50 years of consecutive years of voting. Claude is survived by sons Joel C. of Spring Mills and Don C. and his wife Margaret "Peggy" of Spring Mills; grandchildren and special joys in his life, Amy Myers of State College and Aaron Myers of Spring Mills. He is also survived by brother Charles Myers and his wife Miriam of Centre Hall; sisters Mary Hazel Smith of West Chester, and Gladys Durand and her husband Nelson of Mount Pleasant, SC. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews; and his faithful yellow lab, Gracie. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by brother Paul Myers, and his wife, Miriam; and brother-in-law Paul Smith. Among Claude's joys in life were helping those in need, farming, gardening, hunting, fishing, making brownies to share with his family and friends, enjoying coffee and Pop Tarts with his granddaughter Amy, and sharing "good bites" with Gracie.
