Paul Waldschmitt, 90, of Remsen, died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999 at Marian Health Center, Sioux City, after a brief illness.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 11 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Celebrant was Rev. Thomas J. Hart. Concelebrants were Msgr. Richard E. Zenk of Akron and Rev. John J. McQuirk of Sheldon, with Bishop Daniel DiNardo in attendance. The Fisch Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Waldschmitt was born Sept. 16, 1908 at rural Remsen, the son of John V. and Bernadine (Zenk) Waldschmitt. He was raised in the Remsen area and received his education at both rural school and St. Mary’s Catholic School in Remsen. He was then engaged in farming in Remsen.

He married Olive Koopman on August 20, 1940 at LeMars. They made their home near Remsen where they were engaged in farming. They retired on the farm in 1954 and moved into Remsen in 1961. Olive died on Jan. 20, 1974.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and past church board member, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters, Luxembourg Brotherhood, and was a long time member of the board of directors of Happy Siesta Health Care Center.

Surviving are two daughters, Karen Waldschmitt of Remsen and Beverly and her husband James Neitz of St. Paul, Minn.; two grandsons; two brothers, Raymond of Remsen and John of LeMars; and two brothers-in-law, Leon Steele of Fulton, Ill. and Elmer Willenborg of Remsen.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Michael when a young child and Louis; and three sisters, Mrs. Leon (Louise) Steele, Mrs. Al (Ottilia) Diekmann and Mrs. Elmer (Mary) Willenborg.

Casket bearers were Roger Galles, Dan, David, Gerald and Rick Waldschmitt and Donald Zenk.

Knights of Columbus honorary pallbearers were Melvin Koch, Paul Loutsch, Duane Majers, Orville Portz, Ronald Ruhland and Lloyd Wolf.

Catholic Order of Forester honorary pallbearers were John Bohnenkamp, Donald Delperdang, Leon Fiedler, Larry Galles, Gerald Harpenau and Dale Homan.

Luxembourg Brotherhood honorary pallbearers were Dwayne Douvia, Al Harpenau, Melvin Klein, Herman Kluver, Kenneth Miller and Jim Wolf.

Happy Siesta Health Care Center honorary pallbearers were Sandy Anderson, Jim Beck, Charlotte Braun, Anthony Delperdang, Arnold Galles, Joan Portz, Cloyd Zeig and Nick Van Dam.

Paul Waldschmitt, 90, of Remsen, died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999 at Marian Health Center, Sioux City, after a brief illness.
