In 1747, his father Stephen Vail, purchased property from Gideon Mortall's estate and gave the Mortall property to his eldest son Thomas and a similar size tract from his original holdings, just to the east of the Mortall property, to his second son Stephen Vail, Jr.

About 1758, he married Mary Drake, daughter of Capt. Edward Drake 1713-1776 & Mary Vail 1719-1795.

Thomas & Mary have five children:

It is believed that Thomas Vail built the eastern-most segment of the Vail-Trust House about 1760. His brother Stephen Vail, Jr. built a similar house just across the road a few years later. Many generations were associated with the integrity of the Vail Trust House.

Two hundred and forty six years later, the property becomes a public park.
In 2006, the Vail-Trust House, along with 4.73 acres of adjoining land, was purchased by Green Brook Township form the New Jersey State Department of Human Services. The acquisition price was just one dollar, but it came with two conditions: that the property would be maintained as a public park, and that the house would be restored and preserved.

Thomas died on 4 Dec 1792, in Bridgewater township, Somerset, NJ. His death recorded in Rahway and Plainfield Monthly Meeting.
