As Elmwood did not have any burials prior to about 1900, this person must have been buried somewhere else first. A number of family members in the plot also died prior to this time; they may have been buried on family property first.

After the Civil War, ex-slaveholder, physician, newspaper publisher and businessman Joseph Riley Smith divided up his corn and cotton fields into residential lots to develop Smithfield, now a neighborhood of Birmingham. He named the streets after his children, including Mary.
