Vidalia - Mr. Darrell Collins, age 55, of Vidalia, died Monday, October 9, 2017 at his home, after a sudden illness.

He was a native of Toombs County, lived most of his life in Vidalia, and was a 1979 graduate of Vidalia High School. He retired as Vidalia Police Chief after twenty-two years in law enforcement and was an avid Georgia Bulldogs fan. He was a member of Smith Street Baptist Church, Inman Creek Masonic Lodge #491, and Sons of Confederate Veterans Montgomery Sharp Shooters Camp #2164. He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Gross Collins.

Mr. Collins is survived by two children, Justin Collins of Los Angeles, California and Dara Collins Dennis and husband Jack; his father, J.D. Collins and wife Betty all of Vidalia; two brothers, David Collins and wife Nellie of Grand Prairie, Texas and Dean Collins and wife Sherri of Vidalia; and four nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, October 12th at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Pastor Chester Proctor officiating. Burial will follow in Collins Chapel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday afternoon from 1:00 until just prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted, or those desiring may make memorial contributions to Sweet Onion Animal Protection Society at P.O. Box 210, Vidalia, 30475.
