Dr. Janice Ellen Hale was born April 8, 1948 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Rev. Phale Dophis and Cleo (Ingram) Hale. She went to be with the Lord on Thursday September 14, 2017 in Farmington Hills, Michigan.

She moved with her parents to Columbus, Ohio when she was two years of age and attended East High School, Champion Jr. High, and Eastwood Elementary School.

Her father was the pastor and later pastor emeritus of the Union Grove Baptist Church, former Ohio State Legislator, and Chairman of the Ohio Civil Rights Commission.

Janice was a Professor of Early Childhood Education at Wayne State University and Founding Director of Institute for the Study of the African American Child (ISAAC),

Preceded in death by her father, Rev. Phale Hale, mother, Cleo Hale and brother, Phale Hale, Jr.

Janice is survived by one son, Keith Anderson Benson, sister Marna A. Hale of Cleveland, Ohio and brother Hilton I. Hale, Columbus, Ohio; Nephew Richard W. Pace (Marissa) of Atlanta, Georgia and Dr. Phillip Howard of Boston, Massachusetts; Niece Donielle Howard of New York City; and great nephew and niece Richmond and Alissa Pace of Atlanta, Georgia, along with many other cousins, relatives and friends.
