Mrs. Strachan, 61, died of lung cancer Sept. 1 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. She moved to Phoenix from South Euclid in November 1981.
Mrs. Strachan volunteered at the hospital from 1979 to 1981. In 1980 and 1981, she was named Volunteer of the Year for her "loyal and valuable services."
She had also volunteered at Southlyn Elementary School in South Euclid when her daughters were students.
From 1956 to 1961, Mrs. Strachan taught at Rowland Elementary School in South Euclid. She lived for three years in Detroit, where she also was an elementary school teacher. Upon returning to South Euclid, Mrs. Strachan taught at Bolton Elementary School in Lyndhurst until 1965, when she left teaching to raise a family.
Mrs. Strachan became a certified chemical dependency counselor after moving to Arizona. She worked at St. Luke's Hospital in Phoenix. Mrs. Strachan also worked as a substitute teacher.
A native of Shaker Heights, she graduated from Shaker Heights High School. While in high school, she was a member of the Cleveland Skating Club.
In 1956, Mrs. Strachan graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University, where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority.
While living in the Cleveland area, Mrs. Strachan was a member of Plymouth Church in Shaker Heights and the Acacia Country Club.
Survivors include her husband of 34 years, Harry M.; daughters, Virginia C. of Tempe, Ariz., and Martha H. Gibberson of Phoenix; a twin sister; and a brother.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Knollwood Cemetery, 1678 SOM Center Rd, Mayfield Heights.
