Gordon was a quiet, unassuming, gentle man with solid ethics and courteous nature. He farmed all his work life near Center Ridge Presbyterian Church west of Elliott, Iowa. He was married Dec. 10, 1939 in Red Oak, IA to Helen Lucille Jones, who died February 25, 2007.

Gordon and Helen were active all their adult lives at Center Ridge Presbyterian Church. Gordon was a Sunday School teacher there for many years. In retirement they lived in Red Oak.

Gordon and Helen had two children, Byron (married to Konnie - they live in Stanton, Iowa where Byron is Executive of the Stanton Care Center), and Janet (married to Cary Lantz, living in Clarks Summit, PA).

Gordon Bass, age 90, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2006 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness. Gordon Whitman Bass was born March 17, 1915 in Carson, Iowa the son of Howard Leslie and Claire Elaine (Shearer) Bass. Gordon was raised in the Center Ridge area graduating from the Elliott, Iowa High School. He then attended Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa and also college in Shreveport, Louisiana. After college he worked for the J. C. Penney Company until his marriage to Helen Lucille Jones on December 10, 1939 in Red Oak, Iowa. Gordon and Helen joined hands 66 years ago and walked together through the good times and the bad.

They raised two children on the family farm near Center Ridge in Montgomery County. Gordon was a member of the Center Ridge Presbyterian Church where he was Elder and superintendent of Sunday school, Elliott School Board, Montgomery County Fair Board, 50 year member of the Summit Masonic Lodge #493 A.F. & A.M. of Elliott, Iowa, Order of Eastern Star, was a charter member of the Southwest Iowa Farm and Business Association, and a member of the Montgomery County Cattleman's Association. Gordon enjoyed playing cards and games with family and friends, square dancing, Sunday rides and family get-togethers. He also loved watching sports on television, especially baseball, and was an avid Cubs fan. The highlight to any day was a visit from his grandchildren or great grandchildren.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents and sister: Carole Bosall. Survivors include his wife: Helen Bass of Red Oak, Iowa; son: Byron Bass and wife Konnie of Stanton, Iowa; daughter: Janet Lantz and husband Cary of Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania; 3 grandchildren: Brent Bass of Essex, Iowa; Jennifer Bass Jacob and husband Gerald of Phoenix, Arizona; and Sean Lantz and wife Kathy of Belvedere, Illinois; 6 great grandchildren; sister: Helen Elaine Bass of Dillsburg, Pennsylvania; nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, March 18, 2006 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. J. Keith Cook (from Omaha) and Rev. Loren E. Parker (from Council Bluffs) officiating. Masonic Rites will be conducted during the services at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. There will be open visitation at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. A memorial fund is being established.
