1. OBITUARY: The Bremen Inquirer http://www.bremen.lib.in.us/historical/bpl_OBITdetail.asp?item=101963. Downloaded 06 Jan 2007. Obituary. Hercules A. Bondurant was born on the 29th of July, 1814. Died October 21st, 1889. Aged 75 years, 2 months, and 23 days.
The Subject of the above notice was born in Franklin county, Kentucky. On December 22nd, 1835, he was married to Elizabeth Layton, of the same county and during the fall of 1847 came to this county and settled on his farm west of town, where he resided until death.
The marriage union was blessed with twelve children - eight sons and four daughters - of which two sons and three daughters preceded him to their final rest. Besides these he had thirty-four grandchildren, of which five preceded him, and three great grandchildren, of which one preceded him. Father Bondurant has, so far as known, one brother living in Kentucky, one in Missouri and a sister in Southern Indiana.
He came to Marshall County when it was a perfect wilderness, and toiled from early until late, having a large family to raise, he knew what it was to stand at the head, and so managed that each child received due attention and to prepare all for usefulness and responsibility in life.
Thus ends the life of one of our pioneers, who resided only a couple miles west of Bremen, which place did not exist when he settled in this part of Indiana. As a neighbor we will cherish the many kindnesses of Father Bondurant. The entire community tender their sympathies to the bereaved relatives and especially to the aged and feeble widow, who journeyed with him through life for nearly 54 years.
Funeral services were held at the Huff School house on the 23rd inst., conducted by Elder D. C. Linville, of LaPaz, assisted by Rev. Lewis. The remains were placed in their final resting place in the Ridge cemetery.
