The family moved back to Carnegie, OK when Ray was a young boy. In 1964 at the age of 17 when Ray was a senior at Carnegie High School he quit school and joined the Navy. After receiving his recruit training in San Diego, CA, he served on the USS Savage, which was the first Nuclear Submarine at that time. Ray served four years in the Navy.
Ray met his wife Marie in New London, CN which was one of the Navy Ports. He married Florence Marie Richards on October 16, 1965 in Mystic, CN. To this union three children were born.
Ray was a man of many talents and was a man of patience. He sang and played guitar in a country and western band in the 1980's and was also an experienced lineman by trade. He worked for Lawrence Powerline Construction in Eakly, OK for years and then worked for Bob Elliott of Elliott Powerline Construction in Missouri where he retired. After his retirement he enjoyed woodworking and built birdhouses and decorative shelves which he sold at flea markets in his area.
Surviving are the following: two sons, Mike Lawrence of Pierce City, MO and Varney Lawrence of Bethany, OK; one daughter, Tracy Strickler of Mount Vernon, MO; four sisters, Alice Fay Mills of Tuttle, OK, Doris Butler of Mountain View, OK, Ruth Farrely of Lawton, OK, and Brenda Thomas of Carnegie, OK; two brothers, Carlin Lawrence of Alpha, OK and Johnny Lawrence of Sulphur, OK; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Preceded in death by his parents, Varney and Doreta Lawrence. Five brothers: James, Dale, Claude, Bill and Allin. Five Sisters: Ruby, Agnes, Corene, Willa Dean and Edna Mae.
Graveside services were held at the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery in Springfield, MO on Friday, August 25, 2017.
Mr. Lawrence was cremated at his request.
