BYRON E. GOETZ, 80, SOCIAL SECURITY OFFICIAL
Services for Byron E. Goetz, retired regional commissioner of the Social Security Administration in Chicago, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the First Congregational Church, 1047 Curtis St., Downers Grove. Mr. Goetz, who was 80, died Friday in Good Samaritan Hospital, Downers Grove.
He joined the Navy Reserve in 1927 and was commissioned a Navy ensign in 1933. He began his career with the Social Security Administration in 1936. During World War II, he was made a full Navy commander under U.S. Admiral William F. Halsey and served in both the South Pacific and North Atlantic.
Goetz, who was a Social Security regional representative in Cleveland from 1959 to 1962, was transferred to the equivalent post here in 1962. Three years later he was appointed regional commissioner in Chicago. His territory included Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. He retired in 1974. Mr. Goetz was a member of the Downers Grove Kiwanis Club and served as its fundraising chairman. He also served as a trustee of the First Congregational Church.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two sons, Stephen and Andrew; one grandchild; and a sister.
