Gale was the daughter of Jesse Perry White and Esther Jane Downing, who married on 29 Jul 1883. According to Esther’s obituary, the couple had fourteen children together, five of whom died in their infancy, four sons and a daughter. The names of the other nine were Minnie (13 Sep 1883 – 24 Jul 1972), Bertha M. (23 Jul 1886 – 30 Nov 1975), Clara Bell (23 Nov 1890 – 16 Jan 1993), Charles Francis (29 Mar 1893 – 21 Jul 1955), Floyd E. (4 May 1899 – 19 Sep 1981), Hulda Esther (11 Feb 1902 – 14 Dec 1976), Iva Ellen (22 Dec 1904 – 20 Dec 1973), Gale Donetta (31 Jan 1908 – 30 Sep 1995), and Berniece Olive (12 Apr 1912 – 1 Oct 2005).

I found Gale’s parents and older siblings on the 1900 Census, living in North Bend Township (Ora area), Starke Co., Indiana. Perry White, aged 41, was noted as a common laborer. Esther, aged 32, reported that she had had ten children, but that only five had survived to that census. There with their parents were Bertha, aged 13, Clara, aged 9, Charles, aged 7, and Floyd, aged 1.

The family was still living in the Ora area when the 1910 Census came around. Perry White, aged 50, was doing farm labor. Esther, aged 42, reported that she had had thirteen children, eight of them still living. There with their parents that census year were Charles, aged 17, Floyd, aged 10, Hulda, aged 8, Iva, aged 5, and Gale, aged 2.

The 1920 Census placed the family on Main St. in North Bend Township in Starke County. Perry White, aged 60, was a teamster, working at logging. Esther, aged 52, was keeping house. Only four of their children were still living at home—Floyd, aged 20, Iva, aged 15, Gale, aged 11, and Berniece, aged 7.

Six years after that census, Gale married Delbert D. Kinney on 20 Mar 1926 in Starke Co., Indiana. I found names for six children—Jack Norman (b. 19 Oct 1927), Jerry Lee (20 Aug 1930 – 20 Dec 2009), Freddie P. (ca. 1933), twins Neva Ellen and Nelson Henry (b. 7 Jun 1936), and Doris Jane (20 Mar 1940).

I found the family on the 1930 Census, living at 307 N. Indiana St. in Bremen, Marshall Co., Indiana. Delbert, aged 28, was working as a moulder for a radiator company. Gale, aged 22, was home with 2-year-old son Jack.

In 1935, they were living in Winamac in Pulaski Co., Indiana, and by the 1940 Census, they were in Polk Township, Marshall County. Delbert, aged 38, was farming. Gale, aged 32, had her hands full at home, tending to the demands of their six children--Jack, aged 12, Jerry, aged 9, Freddie, aged 7, twins Neva and Nelson, aged 3, and Doris, aged 1 month.

On 20 Mar 1976, Delbert and Gale celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. They spent sixty five years together before death finally parted them, first claiming Delbert on 15 May 1991 at age 89. Gale lived another four years without her helpmate and companion before passing into the light on 30 Sep 1995 at age 87.
