Johnnie Green Galbreath died April 10, 2012 at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake, IA at the age of 94.
He was born in Vidalia, GA on November 9, 1917 to Elijah Galbreath and Ida Morris Galbreath. Johnnie was born on the family farm in a house built by hand by his father. He attended school in Alston, GA and joined the U.S. Army on November 5, 1936. He was a career soldier with the rank of Master Sergeant, decorated and honored with numerous medals for valor. He retired from the Army after 22 years and went to Houston, Texas. He and an Army buddy owned an electrical business in Texas where he was when he met Eleanor Welsh from Lake View, IA at a social function. They quickly became a couple and married. Johnnie then began the transition moving to Lake View. He adapted to their life in Lake View but missed the south. He and Eleanor bought property on Toledo Bend, LA where they would spend the next thirty years going south in the winter. Johnnie's Army buddy had a home next door and he and Johnnie enjoyed swapping tales of Army life and fishing. Johnnie's time in Lake View was spent fishing with the many friends he made. He was known as a good neighbor who was always willing to help friends in need. He was member in several local organizations including the Masons and Woodsman of the World.
Johnnie along with other Galbreath family members began to build up a family tradition in Georgia every year during Labor Day weekend by forming a reunion. They worked to instill a tradition of joining together to celebrate the Galbreath family legacy or clan as they discovered their Scottish ancestors did. The tradition is celebrated every Labor Day weekend with a large clan meeting with the conclusion of food and fun for over 100 clan members. Johnnie was devoted to attend every year until he was no longer able to travel. There is a large Galbreath Cemetery near Center, Georgia in Toombs County. There will be no formal funeral service in Lake View for Johnnie but a celebration of life among Johnnie's close friends is planned. A memorial celebration of Johnnie's life will be held in Georgia this Labor Day weekend at the annual clan meeting in September. After the celebration, Johnnie's wish was to have a portion of remains, along with his sister remains, Mary Estelle who died February 26, 2012, interred next to his father and mother in the Galbreath Cemetery. The remaining portion to be with Eleanor in Lake View

Galbreath of Sharpsburg, GA; Wiley Galbreath of Largo, FL; Robert Galbreath of Waverly Hall, GA; Ida Hosey of Roopville, GA; and Martha Robles of Miami, FL and sister Imogene Roberson of Leesville, LA. Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter Cora Belle; brothers Lloyd; G.C. and sister, Mary Estelle.
