Bertha C. "Bert" Haglage Monfort was born May 28, 1902 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio to Ida M. Albrecht Stauber Haglage and her second husband, Frederick B. Haglage. She was the baby of the family. The family lived on Colerain Avenue in the Camp Washington neighborhood in a location now underneath I-75. She had four siblings and five half siblings. Before their marriages in 1920, both Bertha and her half brother Christian Stauber lived with Bertha's sister Carrie's family at 222 Mohawk Avenue in the Mohawk neighborhood of Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine. Bertha worked as a candy dipper. Her lifelong friend was Esther Raber Porcher. On November 27, 1920 probably at Washington United Church of Christ in the Camp Washington neighborhood of Cincinnati, Bertha married Montgomery Leonard Monfort, and they became the parents of Blanche L. Monfort Speeg St. Onge. In 1930 Bertha and her family lived on Addison Street in the Clifton Heights neighborhood. After her half brother Christian Stauber died in 1935, she and her husband often visited his widow and children bringing them candy and fruit. In 1940 on the Monforts lived on LeRoy Court in Mount Auburn in the same apartment building as her husband's sister and brother-in-law, Thelma Monfort Reid and Austin Reid. The City of Cincinnati recently closed LeRoy Court, and all the buildings were demolished. In her later years Bertha lived on Ada Street in the Fairview neighborhood, not far from her grandson James Speeg and his family. Bertha died on January 22, 1987 in Cincinnati and was cremated--her husband and son-in-law are buried at Arlington Memorial Gardens in Cincinnati. Her ashes are in the possession of her grandson James Speeg's widow, Bonnie Speeg.
