Benjamin Preston "Benjie" Evans, 62, of Ewell, Smith Island, died Sunday, January 22, 2017 at Salisbury Genesis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

Born August 16, 1954 in Crisfield, he was a life-long resident of Ewell. He was a son of Jennings Lee Evans, Sr. and Edwina Jones Evans, both of Ewell.

A waterman, he was a member of Ewell United Methodist Church and was a life member of Ewell Fire Department. He enjoyed singing and being a member of a small band on the island with his friends. He also loved to attend the National Hard Crab Derby in Crisfield every year.

Along with his parents, he is survived by his brother, Jennings Evans, Jr. of Salisbury; his aunts and uncles, Faye and Wesley Bradshaw of Ewell, Hester Smith and the late Richard Allan Smith, Sr. of Tylerton; his cousins, Leslie and Donnie B. Marsh of Rhodes Point, Allan Smith, Jr. and fiancé Dana Insley of Tylerton, and the late Eddie Russ Smith of Tylerton; and a special cousin, Bill Jones of Salisbury.

He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Edward and Annie Jones and Benjamin and Pauline Evans.

The family would like to thank the care workers and staff at Salisbury Genesis for the care he received over the past three years he was there.
