Mohawk--Ernest W. Brackett, 81, formerly of Mohawk and Washington, D.C., a retired attorney at NASA,died Monday, July 23, 1984 in Bedford, N.Y. Long an aerospace procurement specialist, Mr. Brackett played a major role in the selection of vehicles and suppliers for the U.S. space program, including the first U.S. manned space flight and Moon landings. Mr. Brackett was born in Mohawk, N.Y. in 1903, the son of Jay and Jennie Walker Brackett. He graduated from Mohawk High School and from Cornell University in 1925. On April 24, 1926, he was married to Beatrice L. Paul in Mohawk. She died on October 2, 1983. He was admitted to the New York Bar in 1928, the District of Columbia Bar in 1963 and the U.S. Supreme Court in 1949. Mr. Brackett practiced law in Utica, New York as a member of the firm of Griffith and Brackett. He served in the Army Air Corps from January, 1942-1946, rising to Chief, Procurement Division, Headquarters Air Material Command. As a civilian, Mr. Brackett served in Washington with Headquarters, U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the first Armed Services Procurement Regulations Committee. In 1959, he transferred to the new National and Aeronautics and Space Administration and became Director of Procurement and Supply. He later became Chairman, NASA Contract Adjustment Board; Chairman NASA Board of Contract Appeals; Chairman, NASA Inventions and Contributions Board. He was a major spokesman for NASA before industry groups and author of aerospace procurement articles. He was a past president of the Utica, N.Y., Rotary Club; member of Acacia and Phi Alpha Delta(legal) fraternities. He was a member of the American and Federal Bar associations, National Contracts Management Association; Retired Officer Association, Society of Commissioned Officers, Washington Army and Navy Clubs, Bolling AFB officers Club, Order of Kentucky Colonels, Mohawk Valley Lodge, F & AM; Mohawk Valley Consistory; Antioch Temple AAONMS, National Aviation Club; President, National Conference of Boards of Contract Appeals. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Jaclin) Farrell of Bedford, N.Y. and two grandchildren, Christopher and Robyn Farrell. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday at the Graves-Applegate Funeral Home, Mohawk. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Thursday at the Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mohawk Reformed Church or Cornell University.
