Mohawk--Jay Brackett, 67, a resident of this village for nearly four decades, died at his home, 34 Washington Street, yesterday, Dec. 14, 1936 after an illness of seven weeks. Mr. Brackett was born at Hannibal, Oswego County, June 27, 1869, descendant of a long line of early American settlers, some of whom founded the State of Maine. He was educated in Ilion schools and later at the Rochester Business College. June 11, 1897 he married Jennie Walker, Mohawk, and he has lived in Mohawk since. Mrs. Brackett died in August, 1934. Mr. Brackett started to work in Ilion at the age of 21 for A. N. Russell and Sons Lumber Company. In 1909, together with Richard F. Watkins and William A. Maury, he founded the Ilion Hardware Company, located at the corner of Main and Morgan Streets. The company was incorporated in 1923 and Mr. Brackett had since served as president and treasurer. He was elected president of the New York State Hardware Association and also served as a director in the organization for several years. He was noted for his many affiliations with civic and municipal organizations in the Mohawk Valley. At Mohawk he served as president of the Village Board and also treasurer and president of the Board of Education and was a member of the Municipal Commission. He was a past director of the Chamber of Commerce in Ilion and was also a past president of the Ilion Exchange Club and a member of the Ilion Community Club. Mr. Brackett was also a member of the board of directors of Herkimer County Pine Crest Sanatorium. He served as supervisor for the Town of German Flatts for several terms and was a member of the Mohawk Valley Lodge F & AM, Little Falls Commandary, Ziyara Shrine and Ilion Lodge 1.444 BPOE. He was always active in church work and was a former trustee and member of the First Presbyterian Church at Ilion. He is Survived by a son, Ernest W. Brackett, Utica attorney; a brother, John Brackett, Hannibal Center; a grand-daughter, Jacline Kay Brackett, Utica.
