Joseph Gordentia Dalby was the first son and child of Warren Knight and Lucinda Davis Dalby. His parents along with his brothers Green Davis Dalby, Fountain Moffitt Dalby, Benjamin Bullock Dalby and Jessee Knight Dalby left Shelby Co, Tennessee for Bowie Co, Texas after March 1839. Joseph was appointed as the first Postmaster of Dalby Springs, Bowie Co, Texas on 16 May 1860. He was a private in the famous Company K,11th Texas Cavalry Regiment in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Other brothers Benjamin Bullock, Jessee Knight and a J B Dalby also served with him in the Co K, 11th Texas Cavalry Regiment. On 22 Nov 1864, Joseph was killed near Griswoldville, Georgia.
