Edna Herrington "Eddie" BROOKS (1921 - 2017)

Edna Maude (Herrington) Brooks died peacefully on May 11, 2017 at her home at the Rockwood Retirement Community in Spokane, Washington. She was 95. Edna "Eddie" was born on May 31, 1921 in the small community of Morse, Saskatchewan, Canada. She was the youngest of three children whose parents were Grover Cleveland and Linna Margaret (Robison) Herrington. At the age of nine months, Eddie's father died of complications from asphyxiation acquired while helping get people out of a burning power house building.

After her father's death, her mother moved the family briefly to Spokane and then back to Michigan to be close to relatives. Her mother began teaching school and eventually became the principal of the high school in Saline, Michigan. When Eddie was nine years old her mother died of cancer. Soon after, Eddie and her two siblings came to Spokane to live with their father's sister, Aunt Edna Herrington, who was single and a home economics teacher at Rogers High School.

Eddie attended Garfield Elementary School and North Central High School. Upon graduating, Eddie attended business school in Spokane and went on to the University of Idaho. In 1942 she joined the Beta Theta Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity, joining her sister, Jane as a legacy to Aunt Edna. During WWII she worked for the Washington Trust Bank. The bank president's wife encouraged her to try skiing as there were many young people on the mountain. In January of 1950 she met Ken Brooks on Mt. Spokane. They were married on August 5, 1950.

Three children followed, William "Bill" Herrington, 1952 Barbara Jane 1956 and Ann Elizabeth 1958. Eddie's niece, Joy Lynne' Phillips, joined the family in 1970. Eddie raised her family and supported her husband's architectural career all the while creating a career of her own as an extraordinary community volunteer. Ever the hostess and leader, she helped bring together the wives of Spokane architects into the Women's Architectural League (WAL) and was its second president in 1963. For over 70 years she was a member of Spokane Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Theta Alumnae, serving as president from 1955-57.
Until her death, Eddie was a member of Chapter AI of the P.EO. Sisterhood being initiated in 1954. She held several offices, twice president, and worked on many committees for over 50 years raising money for educational scholarships for women.

She was PTG President at Roosevelt Elementary School, President of Spokane Panhellenic and served on committees at Spokane Civic Theatre, and the United Crusade Drive. In the early 70s she became involved in the Spokane International Exchange Council (SEIC), which took advantage of her skills and experience in leadership, hospitality and relationship building. Through hundreds of phone calls, the council placed dozens of international visitors in welcoming homes throughout Spokane. Her family hosted many international visitors some of whom are still friends today.

For Expo '74, Mayor David Rodgers asked Eddie to chair the Expo '74 Women's Community Steering Committee Team. She and her team were responsible for hosting arrangements and gifts for all of the international dignitaries during the run of the fair. She termed it "fun work" with a theme of "flexibility" as they welcomed hundreds of dignitaries from around the world to Spokane. Eddie's work with international visitors led to a national honor for SEIC from the National Council of Community Services to International Visitors (NCIV) in Washington, DC. She led SEIC to provide training and development for the Agency for International Development in Spokane and was invited by First Lady Roslyn Carter to attend a reception in honor of a Chinese dignitary.

In her later life, she volunteered with her daughter-in-law Christine (Culler) Brooks at Christ Kitchen, and continued to participate in Martha Circle at First Presbyterian Church where she was a longtime member.
Recently she enjoyed visits from all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren giving the little ones rides in her lap on her wheelchair. She looked forward to weekly coffee with her son, Bill, and daily visits from her daughter-in-law, Christine and long-time friend, Marie Chapman.

Eddie's family would like to thank the staff at Rockwood from the RN's, LPN's and especially the NAC's to Housekeeping, Maintenance, Food Service and Reception for taking good care of her and always welcoming her family.

Our beloved mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Kenneth William Brooks, her brother, William Franklin Herrington, her sister, Jane Herrington Phillips, and her aunts, Edna Blanche Herrington and Elizabeth Herrington Irwin.

She is survived by her children, William "Bill" Brooks (Christine) of Spokane; Barbara Brooks (Mike Pratt) of Portland, Oregon; Ann Brooks Harper (Jack) of Pleasanton, California; niece Joy Phillips Moorhead (Bob) of Olympia, Washington; grandchildren, John Harper (Kim), Stephen Harper (Kate), David Moorhead (Ashley), Jane Moorhead Scott (Thomas), Heather Brooks, Laura Brooks, Randall Pratt, Kenneth "Kenny" Pratt; and great-grandchildren, Abigail Harper, Elizabeth Harper, Elliot Harper, Raelyn Moorhead Scott, Jullian Tagavilla and Keegan Tagavilla.
