Born at Point Douglas, Manitoba in 1854, son of John Sutherland and Janet MacBeth, he attended Manitoba College then farmed for a time on the east side of Kildonan, also taking up a homestead at Millbrook. He sold his farm in 1882 and moved to Winnipeg to engage in the real estate business, continuing in it until the time of his death. On 25 December 1879, he married Margaret Hackland, a daughter of ship captain Gilbert Hackland. He died of an epileptic seizure near his cottage at Winnipeg Beach, on 12 July 1909.
