Sister Mary Josephine Schmitt, age 93, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, died Monday evening, April 24, 2017 at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc. The former Emma Marie Schmitt was born on November 28, 1923 in Cleveland, Wisconsin, daughter of the late Frank X. & Mary J. (Leonhard) Schmitt. She entered the Convent in 1937 and professed her vows in 1941. Sister Mary Josephine earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Silver Lake College, Manitowoc. Sister Mary Josephine served as a teacher at St. Mary, Kaukauna, Holy Rosary, New Holstein, St. Agnes, Green Bay, St. Anthony, Marinette, St. Anne, Francis Creek, St. Andrew, Manitowoc, Sacred Heart, Oshkosh, St. Bernadette, Appleton, St. Patrick, Maple Grove, St. Mary, Kaukauna, all of Wisconsin; Holy Family, Lindsay, Nebraska, St. Nicholas, Zanesville, Ohio. After retiring from teaching, Sister served as remedial teacher at St. Mary, Clarks Mills and Ashton, both in Wisconsin, a caretaker of the elderly, health service assistant and various works at St. Joseph Home, West Point, Nebraska, Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc, St. Paul Home and St. Paul Manor, Kaukauna, and St. Francis Convent, Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Since 2014 she had been a resident of St. Rita Health Center. She is a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity.
Survivors include the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents: Frank & Mary (Leonhard) Schmitt; seven brothers and seven sisters- in-law: George (Mary), Albert, Henry (Josephine), Joseph (Mary), William (Veronica) (June), Francis, and Clarence (Betty) (Elaine); and two sisters and two brothers-in-law: Genevieve (Charles) Sukowatey and Rita (Herbert) Mahloch.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 28, 2017 at Holy Family Convent Chapel, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Placid Stroik, O.F.M. with burial at Holy Family Convent Cemetery, Manitowoc.
The family will greet relatives and friends at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, 2017. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Family Convent Chapel. Friends may also call Friday morning at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc, from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.
