Donald Nelson of Newfolden, MN passed away on Friday, April 21, 2017 at the Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls, MN surrounded by his loving family.
Memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 2:00 PM in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Newfolden, MN with Reverend Cathie Rhodes and Ollie Urdahl Officiating. Burial will be held at St. Edwards Catholic Cemetery at Strandquist, MN.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 28, 2017, 5 – 8 PM with a 7 PM prayer service at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN and also one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
Donald Nels Nelson was born April 10, 1930 at Bagley, MN son of Nels and Eva (Willard) Nelson. He was baptized and confirmed at the Mission Church in Newfolden, MN. He attended Blackbird Country School in Newfolden.
He entered the US Army on November 29, 1951 and served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged on November 6, 1953. Following his discharge he returned to Newfolden and worked various jobs in the area.
On September 6, 1954 he was united in marriage to Mildred Veselka at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Strandquist, MN. To this union 6 children were born. The couple resided in Newfolden until Mildred’s death in 1996. He lived in Newfolden until 1997. On June 27, 1998 Donald was united in marriage to Juliet Larson at Greenbush, MN. They spent the summers at Birch Beach on Lake of the Woods and the winters in Apache Junction, AZ. In the fall of 2012 Don moved back to Newfolden were he has resided since.
He worked for Roy Benson and Son’s for 25 years and also worked for Strata Corporation for 25 years, retiring in 2005. Don enjoyed summer fishing, playing cards, spending time with his children and grandchildren and was a pro at horse shoes and the bean bag toss game. He was a member of the Newfolden Lions and the Middle River Legion #444 for 65 years. He enjoyed tinkering and working outdoors, especially in his yard. He always loved to tell a good joke. He took pride in being Jay’s right hand man. Don enjoyed the time spent at the Newfolden Senior Citizen Center.
Don is survived by his six children Donavan Nelson of Gillette, WY, Marla Augustine (Special friend Jimmy Olson) of Holt, MN, Darwin (Sue) Nelson of Newfolden, MN, Nancy (Danny) Engen of Newfolden, MN, Jay Nelson of Newfolden, MN, Jodi (Doug) Schulz of Grygla, MN, stepson Jay (Carolyn) Larson of Grand Forks, ND, grandchildren Matt (Trisha) Augustine, Mark (Miki) Augustine, Holly Augustine, Aaron (Cassie) Nelson, Amanda Nelson, Shayla (Tom) Heaton, Davis Engen, Ethan and Leah Schulz; Step-grandson Jake Larson; Great-grandchildren Kaydence, Kelby, Karmyn and Addison Augustine, Talan Zabriskie, Damian Jourdain, Aubrey Heaton; sister Delores Westerlund.
He is preceded in death by his wives Mildred (1996) and Juliet (2015), his parents, mother and father in law, brothers Kenneth, Art and Edwin; son-in-law Eldon Augustine (2012).
