YORKTOWN - John H Pruden, 68, 303 Seven Hollys Drive, former president of the Newport News Lions Club, died Friday in Riverside Hospital.

Born in Suffolk and a Peninsula resident for the past 46 years, he was assistant superintendent of the X40 division at Newport News Shipbuilding before his retirement in 1976.

He was an alumnus of the shipyard's Apprentice School, a member of Grace Episcopal Church, was a member of the Propeller Club, the May Club, the Yorktown Branch of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, Peninsula Masonic Lodge 278, the James River Country Club, the Thomas Nelson Chapter of the Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, and served on the board of directors of the Newport News Shipbuilding Employees Credit Union.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs Rose J. Prudent; as son John H Pruden Jr. of Yorktown; a brother, Dr. Fleetwood Prudent of Hollywood, Fla; four sisters, Mrs Louise Prudent Apperson of Newport News, and Mrs. Catherine Pruden Campen, Mrs. Emma Prudent Bond, and Mrs. Ruth Prudent Byrum, of of Edenton, NC; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2:30 pm Sunday n Peninsula Memorial Park by the Rev. Claude S Turner Jr. of Grace Episcopal Church.

The family will receive friends in Peninsula Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 tonight and has requested that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society or Grace Episcopal Church.
