A native of Boykins, Va., he was a graduate of Bucknell-Crozer Theological Seminary and received his doctor of theology degree from Chicago Divinity School. He was a retired minister for the American Baptist Churches of Allegheny County, Pa., and served as a hospital visitation volunteer in Hollywood, Fla., after his retirement. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a Mason of Hampton Lodge 204 AF&AM in Florence, S.C., and a member of Green Street Baptist Church.
