Early Life: Monroe was born October 7, 1928, in Williamson Settlement, Orange County, Texas, to Noah Erastus and Ada Azeline Williamson Gallier. He grew up on a dairy farm and learned the value of hard work at an early age. His father passed away when he was nine years old, leaving him to help his mother run the dairy business. He attended school in Vidor, Texas, graduating from Vidor High School in 1946. He excelled in leadership and football. He was team co-captain, the first All District football player from his high school and the first four-year letterman.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: Following graduation, Monroe joined the United States Navy and was stationed in Guam. He attending Brigham Young University after his discharge where he met his future wife, Mignon Ahlstrom. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Northwestern States from 1949 to 1951. Monroe and Mignon were married November 21, 1951, in the Salt Lake Temple. Monroe graduated from BYU in 1954 with a degree in education. He taught 6th grade at Franklin Elementary School for 11 years. He completed a master's degree in recreation at BYU in 1964. He was appointed Principal of Maeser Elementary School for 16 years, and later, became principal at Sunset Elementary School and the Children's School at Utah State Hospital. He retired in 1988 after 34 years with Provo School District. Monroe was a member of the Provo Education Association and served as president in 1963. He was a member of UEA and elected president of all local presidents in the State Association. He was a member of NEA, NESPA, and Phi Delta Kapa a National Educational Fraternity. Monroe founded the Big Springs Outdoor Education Program for the Provo School District in the South Fork of Provo Canyon in 1969. Big Springs Camp has since served thousands of students including some of his children, grand and great-grandchildren. Monroe loved nature and spending time with friends and family in the mountains, hunting, camping, horseback and ATV riding. The U.S. Forest Service asked him to act as volunteer coordinator for the state of Utah in helping develop the Great Western Trail which extends from Canada to Mexico. As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in many callings, including bishop of the BYU 29th Ward. Monroe and Mignon served in the Texas Houston Mission in 1989. They were assigned to his home town of Vidor, Texas, where they enjoyed working with many of his relatives. He and his wife were also temple workers in the Provo Utah Temple. He was loving and caring to all his family; he made great efforts to attend and support them in their special activities. Monroe Glenn Gallier passed away on April 5, 2017. He was 88.
