Catherina Elizabeth was born in Morgenthau (now called Nesterovo), Saratov, Russia. She immigrated to Winnipeg with her family in 1899. In 1902 the family moved to a homestead one mile north of Rhein. She married John Adam Graf on Feb.17, 1903. They had nine children: Emelia (married Carl Stricker), Adam (born and died in 1906), Maria (married Henry Boehm Jr.), Katherine Elizabeth (married William Liebrecht), John, Eugenia ("Gehna", never married), Lydia (married Alex Schaeffer), Wilhelm (born and died 1916), and Albert (married Alvina Starger).
