Joe Billy Herod, age 88, of Kerrville, passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2017. He was born on February 1, 1929, in Grapeland, Texas to Dan and Della Gaines Herod.

Joe graduated from Grapeland High School. He attended Sam Houston State University where he received his bachelors degree. He attained the rank of Captain in the U. S. Army as a battery officer. He then went on to receive his Master's Degree at Texas A&I. After college, Joe started his career as a teacher in North Zulch, Texas from 1955 to 1958. He then moved to the Rio Grande Valley to continue his career as an educator. While in the Rio Grande Valley schools, he served in every capacity from custodian to superintendent. He developed the driver education program at the Region One Education Service Center in Edinburg. Joe finished his career as Superintendent of Raymondville ISD. After retirement, he worked in the Texas Prison System in Raymondville as the education supervisor. He was very active in the Lions Club in Raymondville for many years, and was a 32nd° Mason.

After moving to Kerrville in 1996, he decided retirement was not for him. He was offered a job at Fike's Driving School. He'll be remembered in Kerr County for teaching many eager teenagers to drive at Fike's Driving School, as well as teaching his cherished grandchildren. In 1974, Joe married Barbara Cheney Gregory, and they declared that life took on a whole new meaning. They had 43 happy years together, spending time with family and going on family vacations every summer. Joe and Barbara could be found substitute teaching together almost daily at Peterson Middle School or Tivy High School. When Joe wasn't teaching he could be found with his buddies at the Donut Palace in Kerrville. He was a true Renaissance man. We all knew who to go to for everything, and he never turned down a request from anyone. He could fix anything, and if he couldn't, he created it. He was one-of-a-kind. Joe really loved his life.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Herod of Kerrville; daughters, Suzie Herod Campbell and husband Richard of Franklin, TX, and Hysa Gregory Reagan and husband Clyde of Kerrville; sons, Randy Gregory and wife Cindy of San Antonio, and David Gregory and wife Sandra of Spring Branch; daughter in law, Pilar Mennella Gregory of Kerrville; grandchildren, Barry Campbell and wife Shannon, Robin Spencer and husband Dee, Leah Staeb and husband Kevin, David Gregory and wife Hannah, Kyle Hayes and husband Chad, Joshua Gregory and wife Ashley, Sarah Sims and husband Trey, Benjamin Gregory, Jacob Reagan and wife Sabrina, Miranda Reagan, and Joanna Reagan; and great grandchildren, Aiden Spencer, Cassidy Spencer, Jordan Staeb, Briley Campbell, Tyson Campbell, Kensley Gregory, Carter Gregory, Easton Gregory, Brantley Sims, and Layne Hayes; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
