He was born on Jan. 29, 1928, in Newry, Minnesota, to Henry and Catherine (Wittrock) Janning. He honorably served in the United States Navy. After his discharge, he worked at Hormel until retirement in 1985. On Sept. 2, 1949, he was united in marriage to Nona (Osland) Janning in Charles City, Iowa.
Herbert was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin. He loved playing cards, bowling, snowmobiling, going for coffee and friendly banter at the Grill, and camping with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He loved to tell jokes, especially Norwegian ones. He was the last of 13 children raised on a farm in rural Minnesota. He had 22 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his children, Rita Haas of Chesterfield, South Carolina, Carol (Rick) Zaifert of Buffalo, New York, Connie (Dave) Schaefer of Austin, Tom Janning of Austin, Steve Janning of Austin, Kay Janning of Sacramento, California, John Janning of Faribault, Minnesota, Mary Janning of Owatonna, Minnesota, Dale (Kris) Janning of Robbinsdale, Minnesota, and Glenn (Melissa) Janning of Redford, Michigan.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, with Father Jim Steffes officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday, Interment will be in Cavalry Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post No. 91 and V.F.W. Post No. 1216. The casket bearers will be Marv Stoltz, Todd Stoltz, Scott Schaefer, Turrell Janning, Jeremiah Janning and Dominic Janning.
