"He was born Feb. 17, 1892, in Kansas City, Kan. He grew up in Iowa, and in 1909, he came to the Flathead Valley.
"Here he became associated with the Kalispell Lumber Company, one of the few early-day companies still in business. He continued as an active partner in that business until his retirement in 1963.
"Mr. Hawkins had served for two years in France with the 20th Engineers Batallion during World War I. At the close of the war, he received his honorable discharge and returned to the Flathead and the Kapispell Lumber Company.
"After his retirement, he and his wife traveled extensively. He maintained an active interest in community affairs being a member of the Kalispell Elks Lodge No. 725 and the Kalispell Lodge No. 42 A.F. & A.M.
"In 1967, with Mrs. Hawkins, he established the Hawkins Scholarship Foundation which has enabled many students of Flathead High School to obtain a college education. This foundation will continue this assistance since it was established in perpetuity.
"In 1929, he was married to Maye Slocombe in Kalispell and now is survived by her at the family home. He was the sole survivor of a number of brothers and sisters and also is survived by a nephew, William Hawkins and three nieces, Mary M. Doyne, Phyllis C. Cain and Betty J. Buckallew.
"Services for Mr. Hawkins will be in the Johnson Chapel at 2:00 p.m.
Thursday with the Rev. H. Peder Waldum of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Conrad Memorial Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to the Heart Fund."
