Born in Missouri Territory, which later became Arkansas Territory in 1819. Immigrated to the Republic of Texas in 1838. Married Mary Williams in 1838 when she was about 14 years old. (She was probably born about 1824) Lived primarily in Lamar, Hopkins/Delta, and Hunt County. Worked as a blacksmith and farmer. Died at his home in Quinlan.

1824: Independence County, Arkansas Territory
1826: Old Miller County Arkansas Territory
1827-1830: Modern Day Red River County, Texas or Southeast Oklahoma
1831: Crawford County, Arkansas Territory
1838: Arrived in Red River County Texas, in the same area he lived in with his parents as a boy. Married.
1841: Lamar County formed. Approved for 640 acres of land in Texas, assigned/sold.

Brother of: Charles Henry Smith, Benjamin S Smith, Gilford Smith, and William Riley Smith.

Named after his grandfather Jacomiah Snellgrove who lived in Lexington County, South Carolina in 1800. Found on the 1825 delinquent tax list for "Old" Miller County, Arkansas Territory.
